Common Sports Injuries We See In Clinic
  • Muscle strains
  • Ligament ruptures
  • Tendinopathies
  • Disc herniations
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Knee pain
  • Ankle sprains
Muscle Strains
Muscle strains are among the most common injuries we see in sport. Most mild strains recover in 1-2 weeks but a grade 3 can take months to fully heal.
Common muscle injuries seen in clinic:
  • Hamstring
  • Quads
  • Calf
  • Groin
  • Bicep
  • Glutes
  • Erector spinae
Ligament sprains
Ligament injuries are common in sport and occur when the strong bands of tissue that connect bones are stretched or torn, due to sudden twists, impacts, or changes in direction. The knee and ankle are most frequently affected.
Common ligaments injured:
  • ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL
  • ATFL, CFL
  • Wrist
  • Deltoid ligament
Tendinopathy
Tendinopathy is a common overuse injury in sport, affecting tendons that are repeatedly loaded without adequate recovery.
Commonly affected tendons and their associated sports:
  • Achilles tendinopathy - sprinting/athletics, football
  • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee) - basketball, athletics
  • Hamstring tendinopathy - football, rugby, sprinting
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) - tennis, weightlifting
  • Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) - golf, weightlifting
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy - weightlifting, swimming, baseball, cricket, tennis
  • Tibialis tendinopathy - running, hiking
The Shoulder Complex
Shoulder injuries are very common in sport, partly due to the high demands placed on the joint, which prioritises mobility over stability.
We treat:
  • Rotator cuff strains & tendinopathies
  • Shoulder impingement
  • Frozen shoulder
Knee Pain
High loads during sports which involve running, jumping and rapid changes of direction leave the structures in the knee vulnerable to damage.
Common knee conditions seen in clinic:
  • Runner’s knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome)
  • Jumper's knee (patella tendinopathy)
  • Hamstring tendinopathy
  • ITB syndrome
  • Meniscus tear or irritation
  • ACL and/or MCL sprain or rupture (PCL, LCL less common)
  • Bursitis
The Foot and Ankle
An ankle sprain is the most common sporting injury. Usually an inversion sprain - when the ankle rolls in - damaging the ATFL (the most common ligament injured in the body).
Common conditions:
  • Inversion sprain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Shin splints
  • Stress fractures
  • Biomechanical foot issues
