Understanding Frozen Shoulder

What Is Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes pain, stiffness, and reduced movement in the shoulder joint. It typically develops gradually and can significantly affect your ability to carry out everyday activities.

Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder

Common symptoms include:
  • Gradual onset of shoulder pain
  • Stiffness and reduced range of motion
  • Pain when lifting or rotating the arm
  • Difficulty with everyday tasks (e.g. putting on a coat)
  • Night pain that may disturb sleep

Stages of Frozen Shoulder

Symptoms often worsen over time before slowly improving. Frozen shoulder usually progresses through three stages:
1. Freezing Stage
  • Increasing pain
  • Gradual loss of movement
  • Can last 6 weeks to 9 months
2. Frozen Stage
  • Pain may reduce
  • Stiffness remains significant
  • Daily activities become limited
3. Thawing Stage
  • Gradual return of movement
  • Reduction in stiffness
  • Can take several months

Causes of Frozen Shoulder

The exact cause is not known, but it is often linked to:
  • Previous shoulder injury or surgery
  • Prolonged immobility
  • Poor posture
  • Underlying conditions such as diabetes
It most commonly affects people aged 40–60.

How Osteopathy Can Help Frozen Shoulder

Osteopathy focuses on improving joint mobility, reducing pain, and supporting recovery through gentle, hands-on treatment.
Your osteopath may use:
  • Joint mobilisation to improve shoulder movement
  • Soft tissue techniques to reduce muscle tension
  • Gentle stretching to increase flexibility
  • Advice on posture and daily activities
  • Personalised exercises to aid recovery
We also assess surrounding areas such as the neck and upper back, which can contribute to shoulder dysfunction.

Benefits of Osteopathic Treatment
  • Helps reduce pain and stiffness
  • Improves range of motion
  • Tailored treatment
  • Drug-free approach

What to Expect at Your Appointment

During your consultation, your osteopath will:
  • Take a full medical history
  • Assess your shoulder movement and function
  • Identify the stage of frozen shoulder
  • Begin appropriate treatment
  • Provide exercises

How Long Does Frozen Shoulder Last?

Frozen shoulder can last from several months to up to 2 years if untreated. Early intervention with osteopathy may help reduce symptoms and improve recovery time.
